my third first father's day

You read that right. I found that a little amusing the past few days. For the second year in a row I received numerous cards wishing me a happy "first" Father's Day. How is this possible? Well, it works out kind of funny that way.

In 2006 (no Father's Day wishes) I was just starting to date Tina. Indeed, I remember I actually called her for our first real date in the early afternoon on Father's Day that year. This was after heading out to the batting cages to work out some nervous tension. I can't wait to teach Drew that no matter hold out you get you're going to freak out over having to call a girl you like.

In 2007 I got a few cards from family members based on my role as Quinn's stepfather-to-be. Tina and I were engaged at that point (yep, less than a year for our courtship), so in about eleven months or so I'd officially be "Dad." Sort of. So I got a few cards and a Father's Day gift from Quinn. Which currently sits on my desk at work.

In 2008, last year, I got more cards and Quinn came through with another present. It was my first Father's Day, because now I was formally a stepfather (Quinn actually greeted me as "Stepdaddy" when I got home from work for a stretch). This time people took more care in noting my first Father's Day. We had everybody over to our tiny house in Tonawanda for pulled pork sandwiches.

This year there was no denying it. Drew came a good three weeks early, apparently to provide everyone enough time to shop. Cards now specifically wished me "first" Father's Day wishes. A lot similar to last year, only this time with a three-week-old baby.

I say this only to point out how fortunate I am. I don't really know too many other guys who get three very different, very distinct, and absolutely true "first" Father's Days. And today, on my most recent first Father's Day, I love that I'm here and enjoy the path that took me here. Thanks to everyone for my Father's Day everything. Something tells me it never gets old.
